About the Credential
The Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) is a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis. Professionals who are certified at the BCBA level are independent practitioners who provide behavior-analytic services. In addition, BCBAs supervise the work of Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts, Registered Behavior Technicians, and others who implement behavior-analytic interventions.

Ethics and Discipline

BCBAs must abide by the Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts.

Supervision

BCBAs who wish to provide supervision must complete additional training and continuing education requirements.

Note:

Individuals who hold the BCBA credential should be considered as having met and exceeded standards for the BCaBA and RBT credentials. Individuals who hold the BCaBA credential should be considered as having met and exceeded standards for the RBT credential. However, individuals holding a BACB credential should represent themselves using only the credential(s) awarded to them by the BACB.

Obtaining BCBA Certification
Applicants for BCBA certification must meet one of three sets of eligibility requirements.

Maintaining BCBA Certification
BCBAs are required to recertify, acquire continuing education, and comply with the BACB’s ethics requirements.

Doctoral Designation (BCBA-D)
BCBAs who are current in their certification may acquire an addition designation if they have a doctoral level degree that meets qualifications.

Reporting Requirements

BCBA certification requires a graduate degree, advanced training in behavior analysis, and a passing score on the BCBA exam.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants for BCBA certification must meet one of the following three options:

Option 1 requires an acceptable graduate degree from an accredited university, completion of acceptable graduate coursework in behavior analysis, and a defined period of supervised practical experience to apply for the BCBA exam.

Option 2 requires an acceptable graduate degree, a full-time faculty position in behavior analysis that includes research and teaching, and supervised practical experience to apply for the BCBA exam.

Option 3 requires an acceptable doctoral degree that was conferred at least 10 years ago and at least 10 years’ post-doctoral practical experience to apply for the BCBA exam.

Exam:
Applicants must take and pass BCBA exam, regardless of the eligibility option used to qualify. Authorization to take the exam is only provided to applicants who have submitted a complete exam application to the BACB, including all documentation necessary to demonstrate that they have met all of the criteria for one of the eligibility options above.
